Wow, what a day for the crew and the Wessels family! We started with a TV interview from KMEG news, a great way to start the day for sure. Thank you Erika Thomas!
We spent the day with Mark, Lin, and Sam all across Rock Rapids. The footage of Sam and Lin walking to school took that country feel and added another dimension of a past time of simplicity. Sam performed great at school for Rene and Rosleny. Afterwards, the crew came back to finish up the interviews with Mark and Lin. What was originally going to take half an hour turned into over an hour interview chock full of great stories and the real world of autism. We finished up our time in Rock Rapids with some footage at the park, where Sam explained how he felt about autism. It was some of the best footage we’ve gotten so far.
We ended the day by heading to Spencer, Iowa to speak with Barbara, a nurse practitioner and therapist with over 20 years experience in the field. She’s really going to open some eyes with her observations about autism in Iowa.
Sam was sad to see us go and asked if we would come back to visit. Our crew was just as sad to go, and commented often about how sweet of a kid he is and how much we are going to miss him on our journey. We’re looking forward to visiting Iowa again shortly. Tomorrow, we visit the daVanports in Lincoln, Nebraska where we are now. Be sure to check our photos today and we can’t wait to give you our next update!
